Pavement consultants are targeting minimum traffic disruption and planned maintenance in their latest efforts to improve runway maintenance techniques. Three new design methods have emerged in airport pavement design techniques, led by research work in the USA, UK and Australia. They are all based on an analysis method known as multi-layer elastic analysis, where the pavement is represented as a layered structure. Each layer is defined by elastic properties and stiffness, and this allows the stresses and strains in the pavement structure to be measured in a theoretical way.
