OPERA, AN EXPERT SYSTEM FOR VMS CONTROL IN MOTORWAY NETWORKS: VALIDATIONS IN SCOTLAND
This paper describes an expert system called OPERA that has been designed, developed, and tested on the interurban highway network in Scotland, between Glasgow and Edinburgh. OPERA makes use of on-line simulation for traffic reconstruction and forecast, and of expert rules for automatic vehicle monitoring systems (VMS) strategy generation in case of incidents occurring in the network. OPERA has been tested off-line on various scenarios before being implemented on site. It has also been in real operation during several months, a period when a certain number of real incidents occurred. This paper will briefly describe OPERA, give the reuslts of both off- and on-line tests from the viewpoint of forecast accuracy, relevance and consistency of strategies generated, compliance of aid-to-decision system, and its future developments.
