THE DEVELOPMENT OF TRAFFIC INFORMATION SERVICE SYSTEM BY APPLYING PERSONAL COMPUTER COMMUNICATION

The Hanshin Expressway Public Croproation (HEPC) has been expanding its expressway network as well as its facilities for information provision to expressway users. In the past, the HEPC had no facilities other than its automatic telephone service system, which provided the latest traffic information on the expressway to motorists before they started traveling. With this telephone service system, computer-edited information was provided to users one-sidedly from a telephone and without specific traffic information. Having witnessed the spread of personal computers among households and an increase in the population who use personal computer (PC) communication, the HEPC developed a traffic information service system by applying PC communication to solve the above-mentioned problem. With the new system, PC users can access the HEPC's traffic control center from their homes or offices to obtain real-time traffic information. The system accepts a request for information input from the terminal operated by an individual user and displays a specific type of information as requested by the user in easy-to-understand word messages as well as in color graphics. Although this system is under trial operation and has some problems yet to be solved, it has a bright future as the information service facilities of the next generation.
