THE RADIO FM ON THE HIGHWAY IN FRANCE

During peak traffic periods, general radio stations give road information during peak listening hours. This information, inevitably inaccurate because it refers to the whole country, is broadcast at set times and can be subject to interpretation by journalists. In 1988, COFIROUTE launched France's first highway-specific radio station providing motorists with updated and reliable information as appropriate. This radio was based on a high-power transmitter, which covered two sections of the highway on a range of about 100 km. To enable a fast broadcast of updated and appropriate information, a central data and collection processing system has been developed and a specific studio has been installed to produce the highway radio program with news and music. COFIROUTE pursued its development to extend the radio broadcast throughout France and patented a specific isofrequency broadcasting process based on low-power transmitters, which enables listeners to stay tuned to the same FM frequency. Two other highway companies have developed another radio broadcast on a single frequency and are intending to extend their coverage throughout the network.
