AO 177 is a cost constrained design for a ship with minimum manning. Accordingly, the machinery plant was designed for simplicity, low maintenance and a high degree of centralized control and monitoring. In developing the design, experience with earlier automated and conventional steam auxiliary ships was coupled with current Merchant Marine practice to provide proven, up-to-date systems and equipment which can be operated and maintained by relatively few people. This paper describes the overall machinery plant with special emphasis on the machinery plant central control system design.
