SOURCE IDENTIFICATION OF FUEL OIL SPILLS

Ultraviolet, infrared and flourescence spectrometry and gas chromatography were studied as methods for the passive tagging of furnace fuel oil spills. It was found that only gas chromatography, using a sulphur sensitive flame photometric detector, was capable of distinguishing between different brands of furnace oil which had been weathered for more than twenty four hours.
