MARVL HIGHWAY VISIBILITY MONITOR: REAL TIME HIGHWAY SAFETY
Highway and rural roads are subject to multi-vehicle accidents resulting from sudden reductions in visibility caused by fog, snow, or wind-blown snow or dust. These accidents that are due to low visibility are generally severe and often result in significant loss of life and extensive property damage. Santa Fe Technologies has developed and deployed an eye-safe, fully automated LIDAR unit called MARVL to detect and track changes in visibility at distances up to 20 km. The unit is currently in operation providing visibility data on an interstate highway in the northwestern United States. The Idaho Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) MARVL program has made a major step forward in applying technology to this safety issue. The MARVL ITS operational test program provides real-time reporting of actual roadway visibility conditions and their locations.
