THE BUS-VAO SYSTEM

The N-VI Highway, a radial access located in the northwest part of Madrid, realizes serious traffic congestion due to commuters originating in residential areas located along 40 km that are destined for the town center. No alternative routing and limited space for physical extension due to building and environmental protection make solutions even more challenging. This paper explains the decision by the Spanish Administration to use the available space to implement an intelligent lane management system designated for high occupancy private vehicles and public transportation. Open systems technology was used in systems design. The paper addresses network topology, control philosophy, system architecture, and control and information devices. Experience to date is shared.
