OCEAN TRANSPORT OF WOODCHIPS-SPECIALIZED SHIP DESIGN AND HANDLING FACILITIES

This article begins with a detailed analysis leading to the basic design parameters of a modern bulk wood chip carrier. Various types of exclusive (oil, ore, bulk, container, car) vessels are compared, and the design and construction of a chip carriers are discussed. The economics of chip transport is covered, and an analysis of log, chip, and pulp transport is given. Specialized chip loading and unloading methods and equipment, both land-based and on board the ship are also described. Under the conditions described, total transport cost with a chip carrier is about 60% of that of a log boat, and it is more effective with increasing vessel size.
