In the past few years, the ministry has tended to use thin asphalt surfacings on roads with daily traffic volumes less than 2000. These surfacings range in depth from one and a half inches to two and a quarter inches over granular base for economic reasons or in stage construction for reason of anticipated settlement. More recently, one and a half inch hot mix surfacing has been widely used in place of prime and double surface treatments. This performance study of thin asphalt surfacings was proposed to determine whether their performance justifies their use and to indicate possible causes of poor performance. /TRRL/
