SURVEY OF ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY DEPLOYMENT IN TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT CENTERS WITH AN EMPHASIS ON NEW SENSOR TECHNOLOGIES AND INCIDENT DETECTION

There are several traffic management centers and traffic operation centers (TMCs) in operation in the United States, and several research groups developing new sensors and algorithms for use by these centers. The general purpose of this survey was to identify the current traffic sensors and incident detection algorithms used by these centers and to determine their interest in several different current and proposed research areas and topics under development by civil engineering researchers at the University of California, Irvine and other universities. This paper provides description of this project, a discussion of the survey design, some of the survey results both quantitatively and qualitatively, and recommendations based on the survey results.
