THE 1989 PRESTRESSED GIRDER PROJECT

The 1989 Prestressed Girder Project was undertaken to provide insight into the cause and probable effect that the cracking would have on the service life of the structures included in this report. The following are the project objectives: (1) to determine the probable cause of the cracking, (2) to determine if the presence of the cracking has reduced the strength of the girder, and (3) to determine if epoxy injection will effectively repair the girders. Some of the factors considered during this study include: age and cycles of loading, the skew of the bridge, analysis of the measured flexural strains, the integrity of the cross section, average daily traffic and loadings, and presence or absence of deck replacement.
