STATIC ANALYSIS OF A LIGHT TRUCK FRAME USING THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD

A finite element idealisation of a truck chassis frame was created and used to predict deflections under various types of loads. Torsion constants for beams with warping restraints were calculated by a subsidiary programme using plate elements to represent the beams. A test rig was built to support the chassis frame and was designed to avoid indeterminate constraints. Deflections of the frame were measured relative to a specially supported reference frame. Applied loads included out-of-plane bending, torsion, brake torsion, lozenge and lateral loading. Agreement between prediction and experimental values was good for out-of-plane bending and torsion but less satisfactory for in-plane loads. /Author/ /TRRL/
