ALTERNATIVE ROAD TRANSPORT FUELS - A PRELIMINARY LIFE-CYCLE STUDY FOR THE UK. VOLUMES 1 AND 2

The study examines the overall economic, energy and emissions implications of alternative fuels in a UK context. The fuels considered are: petrol; diesel; liquified petroleum gas (LPG); compressed natural gas (CNG); electricity; biomethanol; bioethanol and biodiesel. Volume 1 is an overview, summarising the major results and implications, while the detailed findings are presented in separate chapters, one for each type of fuel, in Volume 2. Emission factors available for the alternative fuels are considerably less comprehensive than those for petrol and diesel. Samples are limited, are not identical for each fuel and are not based on the same testing procedures. Scale factors have been derived to relate emission rates from each fuel to those of an equivalent petrol or diesel vehicle under the same conditions. Light goods vehicles have been chosen as a basis for comparison in the Volume 1 overview as they are most likely to be one of the first applications of alternative fuels. Both old and new buses are dealt with in detail in Volume 2.
