THE SEVILLE MOTORWAY CONFERENCE. EXPANSION JOINTS IN STRUCTURES. THEME 3. SPANISH REPORT

GIONATE STRADALI DI SIVIGLIA. I GIUNTI DI DILATAZIONE NELLE OPERE D'ARTE. TAMA 3. RELAZIONE SPAGNOLA

Spain has only about 6 or 7 years' experience in the construction and use of motorways, and the joints used are those introduced by other European countries, notably France and Germany. The mechanical behaviour of four types of joint used on motorways and associated structures are discussed: angle iron plate joints, which have given poor results even at short intervals (12-15M) and with light traffic; heavy joints with passive anchorage (such as the Maurer, Reinsthal and Vredstein of German design), which are the most used in Spain, and with good results; heavy joints with active anchorage (such as the Freyssient and Cipec from France); and epoxy-neoprene joints, recently used on both flexible and rigid pavements. The trend towards continuous slabs, long prefabricated beams (30-40M), and continuous cast in place beams, is developing in Spain. /TRRL/
