SERVICE EVALUATION OF LIGHT DE-ICING AND SNOWPLOWING EQUIPMENT

This document describes an in-service evaluation program for lighter-weight de-icing and snow removal equipment. The evaluation follows the design, development and manufacture of a salt and/or abrasive spreader, and a one-way snow plow with a wing built of composite materials. The evaluation covers the use of this equipment installed on a pilot truck that was used to de-ice and remove snow from part of the highway network in a region in Quebec during the winter of 1994-1995. The users were consulted throughout the evaluation for their opinions on the operation, maintenance and handling of the equipment. The evaluation made it possible to validate the concepts used, propose alterations and adjustments, and suggest that the monitoring of this equipment be continued. The evaluation also helped to identify the weight reductions obtained by using composite materials, which came to a total reduction of 2,075 kg compared to conventional steel equipment. (A)
