PROPOSED SPECIFICATIONS FOR NARROW-GAP IMPROVED ELECTROSLAG WELDING

This document contains proposed modifications to ANSI/AASHTO/AWS D1.5-88 Bridge Welding Code and should be used in conjunction with this Code. The modifications describe the Narrow-Gap Improved Electroslag Welding (NGI ESW) procedure that is based on the results of the improvements in electroslag welding technology achieved by research sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) in the 1980s. This document provides mandatory acceptance requirements for the use of the NGI ESW procedure in fabrication of highway bridges. Mandatory acceptance requirements for alternative ESW/EGW procedures that may exist or be developed in the future for welding of bridge tension members are provided in Appendix X attached to this document.
