ASSESSING THE ROLE OF ADVANCED PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS IN SAFETY AND EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT

The purpose of this study is to assess the role of advanced public transportation systems (APTS) in transit safety and emergency management. First, the study provided an overview of the different components of the APTS program of FTA. The study then provides an overview of the automatic vehicle location technologies. Advantages and disadvantages of these technologies are then addressed. The study reports the results of visits to selected transit authorities. Finally, the study discussed a framework of a metric system that can be used by transit agencies to evaluate their safety and emergency management programs.
