SAGGING ERSKINE TO GET A RISE

An account is given of the contract to strengthen the cable stayed box girder bridge which crosses the Clyde near Glasgow. The eighteen month strengthening contract has two separate aspects. The principle operation is to reinforce critical box members and the other is to restress the cable stays at each Anchorage. Details of these operations are given. The operation will result in the mid-span hump being raised by about 260 mm which is slightly higher than the original deflection. Erskine is a toll bridge which is underutilised and advantage is being taken of this to defer work until merrison requirements are firmly established. Work will be carried out without significant reduction of traffic over the bridge. /TRRL/
