A GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM (GIS) BASED ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ANALYSIS PROTOTYPE FOR HIGHWAY TRAFFIC NOISE. (A CASE STUDY OF THE A2 HIGHWAY IN UTRECHT)

Attempts were made to introduce Geographic Information System (GIS) technology for environmental impact analysis application. This research can be considered as a contribution to the current endeavours in this field where research examines the possibility for formulating environmental impact analysis from road traffic noise within a GIS system. A prototype has been developed which can evaluate and assist decisions concerning highway noise pollution in the Netherlands, integrating the current environmental assessment procedures in the Netherlands within ARC/ORACLE GIS system. Predictions obtained from application of this prototype are compared with those given from consultant office. The result is a system which shows a high degree of correlation with existing control data for the same study area. Some differences do however remain which need for further studies.
