THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF RAILWAYS

The purposes of this book are: (1) to inform environmental specialists and land use planners about railways; (2) to inform railway planners and designers about the environmental impacts which they may cause and to suggest how they can design optimal solutions; and (3) to suggest ideas to economists and decision makers concerning valuation of the land and other resources affected by transport infrastructure developments. The seventeen chapters are organized in four parts. Part I addresses railways and planning, Part II impacts on people, Part III impacts on resources, and Part IV planning for the twenty-first century.
