This paper describes a study undertaken to assess the use of machines for measuring the surface profile of footways. A series of evaluation trials are described on artificial and in service footways. Comparisons are made between machine measurements and Highway Inspectors' assessments of condition. A comparison is also made between machine measured parameters and users' perceptions of footway serviceability. The benefits of using machine systems are discussed and suggestions are made for their most effective use. (A)
