OZONE IN COAST GUARD SHIPBOARD WASTEWATER TREATMENT

This paper describes the Shipboard Waste Treatment System, known as the Grumman Ozotherm system, which has been developed under a contract awarded by the Coast Guard. A prototype of 10-20 Man Shipboard Waste Treatment Ozotherm system was designed, developed, constructed and tested. The ozonation process received the major emphasis during system development because of its potential for BOD removal, solids removal, bleaching of remaining solids, and disinfection. The tests showed that the selected ozonation process made a significant contribution in removing BOD and TSS. The tests also showed that complete, or almost complete, disinfection was accomplished with the selected ozone concentration and detention time in the reactor. Based on tests to date, the Ozotherm system performance meets both the requirements of the U.S. Coast Guard contract and, in all probability, the standards being considered for shipboard wastewater treatment devices.
