A TRANSPORTATION ENGINEER'S GUIDE TO THE INTERNET

Real-time data dispersion, traveler information services, and communication and data exchange are examples of the resources available to the transportation community through the Internet. This article introduces the reader to the Internet, providing definitions of Internet terms and listing Internet resources that are related to transportation. Five major transportation applications are available via the Internet: 1) trip planning, 2) education and research, 3) government, 4) professional organizations, and 5) communications. The transportation applications are examined and Internet access guidelines are presented.
