The optimal method of sanitary and storm sewer rehabilitation often depends on flow capacity. The flow capacity can be determined using the Manning formula, which includes the empirical parameter n. In this committee report, the principal elements of the Manning formula, coefficient, and field variables that contribute to the selection of values for n are discussed and typical values for n for mature sewers needing rehabilitation and for mature sewers rehabilitated with currently available rehabilitation materials are provided. The report also discusses a rationale for selecting a design n within a range of values and estimating the resulting change in flow capacity of the sewer. A field example is provided where n values were measured. The report provides guidance to engineers making decisions related to rehabilitation of gravity flow sewers.
