A MODULAR ROAD CONDITION DATA COLLECTION SYSTEM FOR LOW COST ROADS

A modular system for collecting road condition data has been devised which is suitable for use on both heavily trafficked and low cost roads. A laptop computer, situated in the survey vehicle, contains a database to which is added the section-by-section road condition data collected by the instruments. Roughness is measured using a vehicle mounted bump integrator (VMBI) and rutting is measured to within 3 mm using cheap ultrasonic transducers. The measurement of cracks by image analysis is a current research problem and will become part of the modular system if real time processing of images collected at normal traffic speeds can be achieved. The paper describes the current status of the system and the progress with the crack measurement research. (A)
