FRANCE: MORE PRIVATE ROAD TUNNELLING

This feature surveys recent French tunnelling activities, and reports on two current tunnelling projects and one future project. During the last five years, France and the UK have each had about 17% shares of the tunnel boring machine (TBM) market. Both countries are building massive underground railways. Several large rail tunnels are being built or planned to extend France's high-speed rail network. Projected large road tunnels include those on the A41 between Annecy and Geneva and on the A43 from Lyon to Turin through the Savoy Alps. The article describes the following three projects. The Boulevard Peripherique Nord de Lyon (BNPL) tunnel is the first build-operate-transfer (BOT) tunnel contract to be awarded in France. The tunnel will be part of the A6 ring road round the centre of Lyon. It has two parallel tubes, each 3320m long with 11.4m diameter, to be driven by earth pressure balance (EPB) machines and lined with bolted precast concrete segments. The 2100m long single bore tunnel for Section F of Line 2 of the Lille Metro Extension has encountered very sticky clay, which is overlaid by layers of silt, sand, and gravels. An articulated TBM is being used. Two bored tunnels are proposed for the A86 highway west of Paris: (1) a double-deck design for light vehicles; and (2) a tunnel for all vehicle types.
