THE VALUE AND COST FOR TRAINS AND BUSES (LONG DISTANCE COACHES) WITH "TRAIN INTERIORS"

Other studies have evaluated bus and train services where several attributes differ. This paper describes a situation where buses and trains have about equal accessibility, fare and comfort level. The "Coast Buses" (Kustbussen) in Blekinge and the "Coast Train" (Kustpilen) have the same timetable, and the buses stop at the railway stations. The buses are about as spacious inside as 2nd class trains. The "Coast Bus" and the "Coast Train" both have high standards with air conditioning and music outlets at each seat. This service has been used in an attempt to find general knowledge about high standard trains versus high standard bus services. The travellers valuations are investigated by computerised stated preference interviews on board the high standard buses and trains. The results show that buses are strongly negatively valued compared to the train but that roomy train interiors reduce these negative valuations considerably. Most of the bus passengers claimed they prefer train when they have a choice. The costs for different train and bus services have been calculated by a traffic cost model. The passengers appreciation rises when they are given more room. The conclusion is that buses with "train interiors" may be competitive. For the covering abstract see IRRD 876115.
