AVOIDING ELK ACCIDENTS

The report presents the possibilities of avoiding elk accidents and designing the road to minimize the barrier effect it has for elks. During the nineties, the annual costs of elk accidents were approx. 100 million FIM. For motorways and semi-motorways, avoiding the accidents entails building elk fences. In siting over- and underpassess, elk routes should be taken into account. The choice of plants for landscaping can effect elk behavior.
