ON OVERLAND FLOW WATER ROUTING

The unsteady overland flow with rainfall as a source of lateral inflow is a common flow type which occurs in the initial phase of surface runoff in an urban drainage system. The understanding of overland flow water routing is the key to the estimation of urban runoff hydrographs. Herein, a fully anaytical solution to the kinematic-wave approximation for unsteady overland flow routing is developed. This method allows time-variant lateral inflows with spatial uniformity. It has many advantages over existing methods. The fully analytical solution removes the dependency on time and space increments selected in the computation without having to worry about the stability and convergence properties. Moreover, the assumptions involved in this method are identifiable on physical terms. Based on the analytical solution, the validity of the unit hydrograph theory and the suitability of numerical solutions are discussed.
