MOVING FORWARD BY SCALING BACK AN ARTERIAL

The City of San Leandro, California is underway with a radical safety project to reduce approximately one mile of a four lane state highway to two lanes plus a median. The City is planning the project to provide at least four elements of improvement to the arterial system, including: To reduce operational conflicts and problems that are currently experienced along East 14th Street; To alleviate accident-prone geometric conditions by the provision of median left turn pockets and closed medians; To reduce traffic stops by incorporation of signal interconnect into the project design; and to create, significant opportunities for improved landscaping and beautification.
