EARLY WINNERS FOR METRO DETROIT'S INCIDENT MANAGEMENT PROGRAM

State and local agencies in Metropolitan Detroit have launched a program of improvements to reduce congestion and improve safety on area roadways. With the cooperation of private partners such as AAA and Metro Traffic Control, these agencies have formed a consortium of parties who share an interest in making Metro Detroit's roadways operate more safely and efficiently. The consortium is the Incident Management Coordinating Committee. This group has defined a program of specific actions to improve incident management. These actions emphasize the cooperative and efficient use of existing resources, but they also provide a framework for effective use of Intelligent Transportation Systems technologies to enhance traffic operations. The actions include establishing a freeway courtesy patrol, combining Michigan Department of Transportation and Michigan State Police Traffic Operation and Dispatch Centers, and deploying computer and communication technologies to enhance traffic management and response to incidents.
