REACTION PRODUCTS FORMED IN LIME-STABILIZED MARINE CLAYS

Engineers have long recognized the benefits of using lime to improve the behavior of marine clays. The authors of this paper noted beneficial changes in a marine clay due to the diffusion of lime from lime column, and lime injected points were studied using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron micrographs (SEM) techniques. The newly created compounds were identified using the XRD method. The diffusion of lime was established through the measurements of lime content and pH from the samples taken at different sites and at different time periods. The transformation of the soil particles due to lime attack on the clay minerals found in the marine clay were examined and discussed.
