SETUP AND RELAXATION IN GLACIAL SAND. DISCUSSIONS AND CLOSURE

Two discussions of a paper with the aforementioned title by York, Brusey, Clemente, and Law, published in this journal (Volume 120, Number 9, September 1994), are presented. In the first discussion, Ghaly rejects the authors' results, stating that the same capacity ratio should be used when making comparisons between pile behaviors--in this case, beginning of restrike/end of initial driving (BOR/EOID) or test load/EOID. Ghaly further comments on the authors' evaluation of potential magnitude of setup with time, noting differences in starting points for setup that make comparisons irrelevant. In the second discussion, Svinkin presents case histories with comparable findings, substantiating the increase in pile capacity with time. Svinkin also recommends the use of power function formulas for use in design of foundation piling. Discussions are followed by closure from the authors.
