The paper, to be presented at the Eurobitume/EAPA Conference in Strasbourg, May 1996, describes two road trials, carried out under normal contractual conditions. The use of suitable performance tests is examined where the structural layers of the pavements were constructed to comply with a draft performance specification. The performance specification was applied to the binder course in one trial and to the roadbase in the other. The contractors carried out performance and composition tests on material specified using the traditional recipe approach in the first phase of each trial. In phase two, the bituminous mix was specified in terms of its structural properties to design a mix of higher quality than laid in the first phase. Some shortcomings of the proposed tests were identified but the performance specification was shown to be superior to recipe methods and a stronger pavement was produced. Possible benefits could result in delays to structural strengthening being necessary or a reduction in layer thicknesses.
