This article describes the successful use of the alternative repairing material, Ultracrete M45, for the repair of certain types of street furniture in the London Borough of Lewisham. Ultracrete M45 is a fully premixed dry pack blend of special cements, selected aggregates, and chemical additives, supplied in 25kg bags. It requires only the addition of water on site, by manual or machine mixing, to provide a fast repairing material that is workable for 5-7min, and sets in 10-15min. Lewisham Borough Council originally used M45 rapid repair mortar to reinstate water main trenches, but has found it very versatile and suitable for many other applications; it is also liked by its workers. It has been especially useful for installing guard railings at pedestrian crossings. Other applications include: (1) subway entrances; (2) the erection of poles and bollards; (3) benching in the bottom of sewers; (4) the installation of new manhole covers; and (5) concrete verges combined with guard rails. The times taken to do these jobs can be reduced dramatically, especially where intermediate stages, requiring sufficient hardening of materials, are required.
