APPLICATION OF A 3D HUMAN MODEL TO COMPUTER AIDED ERGONOMIC DESIGN OF VEHICLES
The development of a 3D computerized manikin tries to satisfy the needs of designers who have to take human factors into account in the design of industrial products like automobiles. MAN3D is such a tool developed at INRETS in cooperation with Renault. In this paper, the main features of MAN3D as regards its structure and functioning are described. The ability to represent any individual customer from a set of external measurements, with a dimensioning module, is outlined. Then, the capacity to reproduce the mobility of the human body by means of 54 joints and various procedures for posture adjustment and movement simulation is presented. Operation is made easier by the full integration of MAN3D into a CAD/CAM system which is the common work environment of designers. The information provided by MAN3D makes it possible to assess fit, reach of commands and visibility of controls for any representative of the end-user population. Examples of case studies with MAN3D illustrate these possibilities. (A) For the covering abstract see IRRD 875443.
