REDUCING COMMERCIAL VEHICLE ACCIDENTS THROUGH ACCIDENT DATABASES

The article concentrates on how organisations can reduce commercial vehicle accidents and the associated environmental, financial and image costs. Methods of reducing the probability of human elements being a contributory factor in the cause of accidents. Key issues at the company level are outlined and steps which organisations can take to reduce accidents are suggested. Recent research and consultancy work from a range of contract distribution companies, parcel carriers and maufacturers is drawn upon. Several clear patterns have occurred from the project about accident costs, their causes and the systems and solutions available to reduce them. This has led to the development of the CCSM accident reduction methodology, which can be applied to all types of vehicle operators. Details are given of the information stored in a typical database. The database should monitor factors contributing to accident cause and severity and it should include both insurance and non-insurance accidents.
