LEARNING FROM EXPERIENCES WITH TRANSPORTATION MANAGEMENT AND TRAFFIC ENGINEERING: A SYSTEMATIC APPROACH TO PLANNING ENERGY EFFICIENT TRANSPORT IMPROVEMENTS

The aim of this report is to assist managers and decision makers in road and transport authorities in the development and promotion of energy efficient and cost effective transport systems. Energy efficiency in transport systems can be an objective of conventional transport planning processes, and the report recommends an energy saving model which can be integrated into that process. The report considers factors affecting energy efficiency in the transport system including fuel consumption and energy efficient driving, guidelines for reducing energy waste, strategies and tactics for reducing energy waste, tools for measuring energy performance and selection of energy saving projects. Seven case studies from the USA, Australia, the Netherlands and Norway are included and these are based on before and after studies completed by the authorities contacted.
