The pros and cons of Citizens Band (CB) radio are briefly discussed, and recommendations by the ATA Council of Safety Supervisors are prrsented. While it is true that CB may be used to avoid police and flaunt FCC regulations, CB use could provide a useful stimulus to the driver, could be used to warn drivers of adverse weather and traffic conditions, and could provide directions and information to drivers in unfamiliar territory. It is recommended, however, that if CB use is to be permitted, a written policy on such use should be developed, a copy of the FCC license must be presented for the driver profile, a suitable electrical source for CB must be provided to avoid the hazard presented by stripped wires under the dashboard, the use of headsets must be prohibited, and infractions of FCC rules by drivers must be actively opposed.
