CREATING INTELLIGENT TRAFFIC CONTROL CENTRES

Some applications of Gensym's G2 real-time expert system software to 'intelligent' traffic control centres are described. Such systems can minimise costly disruptions, and improve the safety and efficiency of surface transport. Several European and US organisations are using the G2 package to add expert intelligence to their traffic management centres. In Neuchatel, Switzerland, a new road network was built, including over 34km of road in tunnels; traffic control in these tunnels was really complicated. G2 was chosen as the basis for its operator decision support system, that would enable operators to guide traffic around incidents safely and efficiently. G2 calculates the control strategy to redirect traffic around closed segments. The operators are very pleased with this new system. Enhanced intelligent traffic management technology, including G2 and a Freeway Incident Management System (FIM) is being installed at the Transportation Management Center (TMC) at Santa Ana, CA, USA. The FIM aims to apply the knowledge of the most experienced operations personnel to ensure more consistent and faster responses to traffic incidents. Rules in G2 analyse data to estimate the severity of each incident and generate a set of recommended responses.
