BACKGROUND TO THE TRANSPORT SERVICES PROJECT

It is recognised that the statistical coverage of the service sector in Europe and the UK is limited. The main findings and recommendations of the UK pilot transport services survey as part of the programme organised by the Statistical Office of the European Communities are summarised. Services covered include business, audio visual, hotel and catering and transport (railways, freight, scheduled and non-scheduled air). The aims of the survey are to assess the availability of existing service data throughout the European Union, to test a set of common variable definitions and to make comparisons between the member states. The poor resopnse for road transport of freight indicates that the information is not readily available to business in the sector and it is suggested that the questionnaire should be simplified. Existing sources for aviation and railways are identified and were considered to be sufficient. For the covering abstract see IRRD 875261.
