The ship is the 6,500dwt Maersk Tempo, built by Shinhama Dockyard and now in service between Hong Kong, Manila and Taiwan. A second ship, the Strider Broadsword is due to be delivered from Shinhama. These two ships are the forerunners of an extensive programme of this revolutionary 'Strider' class. They have been designed so that they can self-load and discharge 20ft, 35ft or 40ft containers by means of a quarter ramp and deckmounted gantry crane. They are also capable of taking non-containerised loads. The design therefore opens up the possibility of full containerised services operating into conventional berths entirely independent of shore handling facilities. The container trailer is rolled on and off over the quarter ramp which provides access at poop deck level. Taking into consideration the dimensions of the 40ft container, the ramp is 22.00m long and 6.20m wide and has a doubleskin structure. The flap is composed of three panel sections in order to give the ramp more flexibility to counter the ship's motion when setting up. The container trailer rolls on to the poop deck from where it then travels through the superstructure and along the top of the hatch covers on the weather deck to a positon under the deck gantry crane for simultaneous unloading/loading of the containers. Twin pontoon covers are arranged on the weather deck to give access to the three-row container cells under each hatch and are reinforced for the 40ft container trailer as well as to provide two-tier loading on the weather deck of 20ft, 35ft and 40ft containers. For this unusual feature of the trailer running on the cover top, careful study has been given to the gap between the panels of each cover, and the method of attaching the container fittings. The hatch covers are also arranged to be interchangeable, port to starboard, forward to aft and vice versa so that a predetermined schedule of container stowage/discharge can proceed with minimum delay. Length (o.a.) 104.00m, Breadth, 18.9m, Depth (mld) 10.50m, Draught 6.70m, Speed 17knots, Deadweight 6,800 tons, Container capacity 330x20ft, or 172x35ft or 160x40ft.
