HEAVY TRAFFIC ON RURAL ROADS: STUDY INTO AXLE LOAD PATTERNS FOR ROAD TYPES

This article discusses research into the traffic load on rural roads in the Netherlands, that is carried out in order to develop a pavement design method for road pavements for these types of roads. The study focusses on heavy vehicles, such as lorries, buses, and agricultural vehicles. Measurements were carried out to gain insight into matters such as traffic volume, composition of the heavy traffic, dynamic axle loads, vehicle mass, damage factor of the vehicles, axle load spectrum, degree of loading, and speed of the heavy vehicles. The measurement results are discussed. A result of the study is expected to be axle load patterns for certain road types in agricultural areas in the Netherlands.
