The next generation of surface vehicles will tend to be larger, faster and more demanding of their powering systems. Engines, propulsors, lift fans and transmissions will need to be extrapolated in size far beyond today's experience, and they will be required to meet more stringent emission, noise and fuel consumption specifications. It is the intent of this paper to survey the available powering system candidates to characterize their performance and physical properties and to describe recent advances which promise more effective solution to these requirements. The two principal items of focus are the propulsors and lift fans.
