COMMON CAUSES OF RETAINING-WALL DISTRESS; CASE STUDY. TECHNICAL NOTE

Cantilever retaining walls in Southern California have proven to be poor performers, based on postconstruction investigations. In many instances, distress occurred because the walls were constructed outside of the original design criteria. Closer examination revealed that during mass grading development projects, walls were designed using soil parameters obtained during preliminary soil investigation. Upon actual construction, though, conditions may have varied considerably from what was originally expected or intended. Soil design criteria must be reevaluated and modifications made to original wall design or an inadequate wall may be constructed and resulting distress will occur.
