BENCHMARKING: PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT TOWARD COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE

A discussion of a paper with the aforementioned title by Lema and Price, published in this journal (Volume 11, Number 1, January 1995), is presented. The discusser describes a research project in which productivity benchmark values were established for 65 basic construction operations in earthworks, pipelines, roads and streets, and concrete works. Discusser Schumann comments that although civil engineering contractors in South Africa were approached and encouraged to participate in the research, the amount of useful data obtained was meager. The discusser concluded that the construction industry has an unwillingness or inability to change. Discussion is followed by closure from the authors.
