STATED CHOICE: A NEW TOOL FOR TRANSPORTATION DEMAND FORECASTING

Stated choice (SC)--an analysis tool in the formative stages--is efficient and precise in its approach to transportation demand management (TDM). Using SC analysis, the performance of TDM strategies can be measured directly from the employees who will be affected by the programs. Several unique commuting situations are presented to the commuter and they select the alternative they most favor. Each alternative is defined by a set of attributes characterized by assigned levels of time, comfort, cost, and convenience. After repeating the process for various combinations, a database of pooled choice and attribute values is generated from the respondent sample. This article describes the survey instrument, sample selection, analysis, and output.
