Although the long-range transportation plan will not solve the Washington region's long-term mobility problems, it contains a number of features that will help to move the region toward the goals and objectives expressed in the Transportation Planning Board Policy Element. Some of the plan's major achievements follow: The plan is financially realistic and includes all projects of regional significance; Identifies funding to maintain the region's extensive existing highway and transit systems through the year 2020; Will move more people along existing transportation corridors using a combination of transit, high-occupancy vehicle lanes, and regular highways; Meets federal clean-air requirements; Encourages ridesharing; Encourages telecommuting; Improves access to area airports; and more.
