GEC Alsthomhas designed a new range of standard modular low-floor light rail vehicles (LRVs) called Citadis. The objective is to reduce the cost of LRVs to make light rail more affordable and therefore expand the market, while offering customers a large choice. Citadis will be highly modular so that range of vehicles can be offered using a range of standard parts. It will also herald a new manufacturing philosophy whereby the modules are bolted together, which should cut production costs. The main objective is to cut the cost of the major components of a light rail system including the track, station, catenary, workshops, telecommunications, etc. The company expects that by reducing the cost of light rail will enable them to compete with hybrid systems such as guided buses.
